Language Register Analysis

I have decided that I am going to write my article in Standard English as I think that it will be clearer and easier for the readers to read. I think that this needs to be the case as the genre of music doesn't have a specific class of people who they are aiming at (such as rap) and so it would be for the best to do it in Standard English.

Font Research / Analysis

I will be using a variety of different fonts throughout my magaizne and I need to do research to find out which fonts will look the best, which link to my genre the best and which I am actually going to use. If I don't find a font that I am definitely going to use, I will know the styles that like which will make it a lot easier to find one that I actually like as I will know what I'm looking for.

Font 1

I like this font because it looks quite old yet cool however I don't think that this is the best for my magazine name on the cover because I dont think that it is interesting enough to grab attention of the target audience in shops which is something that needs to happen in order for the target readers to see and buy and read my magazine. I don't think this font will be used on or in my magazine as it would look weird on the cover and there are better, more suitable fonts to be used inside the magazine on wither the contents page or the double page spread.

Font 2

I like this font because it links to my vintage style really well. It looks really vintage yet still looks quite cool and would be attractive to my target audience. However, I think that this font would be more appealing to females rather than males which would illiminate this gender from buying my magazine. Also, I don't think that this font would catch my readers attention in a shop which is vital for getting people to look at and buy the magazine. I think that this font would look good on either the contents page or on my double page spread because it would be odd to not use this font as it links so well with my genre and theme.

Font 3

This font links in with the style and the genre of my magazine really well and I think (if done in the right colour) would appeal to both genders rather than just one. This means the target audience is still quite broad. I don't think that this would be very eye catching on the front cover however on the inside of the magazine (either on the contents page or the double page spread) it would work really well. This font does look very old fashioned and vintage and therefore links really well to my style, theme and genre

Font 4

This font is very bold and would be eye catching on the shop shelves to my target audience. The bold lettering would be good for my magazine name on the front cover, however I don't like the style of the font. This font looks very retro and, although my styling for the magazine should look retro, this isn't a cool enough vintage style. It needs to look more vintagey (like fonts 2 and 3) in order to link to the styling and the genre of my magazine more clearly. Also, this font isn't very unisex and is very much aimed at females which isn't something which I want.

Font 5

I like this font because it is very unique which links to my magazine genre. Although the font does not look as vintage and stylish as I originally wanted to, I think the quirkiness of this font would look really good in my magazine. I don't think that it is eye catching enough to be on the cover as the masthead as it would need to be bolder in order to gain more attention, however it would look cool as a feature font or to be used on the contents page.

Font 6

I think that this font would be suitable for both genders which is good as my magazine will need to appeal to both genders so that the target audience is wide and many people will be attracted to the magazine. I like the boldness of the font as it will make the magazine title look eye catching when on the shelves of a shop amoungst other magazines. I think that the font could look more vintage in order to match the style and genre of my magazine a bit more, however there is a classic look to the font so I don't see this as a massive issue.

Font 7

This style is vintage but not in the style of it that I would like. This looks like the type oif font used on really old posters whereas I want my magazine and font to look cool and modern with a vintage twist. However, the font is bold and I like that as it means it will be eye catching and will draw someoines eye to the magazine in a shop which would hopefully result in them buying it if they like the genre of music. I think this font would be appealing to males and females meaning that my target audience would still be quite broad which is what I want as the genre appeals to both genders so my magazine should too.

Font 8

This font is really edgy as well as having a clear link to the vintage style that I want my magazine to have. I think that this font would look good on either my cover, contents page or double page spread because it looks good. If it was in bold then I think this font would look good as the masthead on the cover as it has a clear link to my theme, style and genre and would be eyecatching to the target audience. My only concern for this font is that I don't know if it would be attractive or appealing to males as the font (if done in the woring colour) has the potential to look quite girly because of the curves and swirls.

Font 9

Although this font isn't the style of vintage that I would like (would be suitable to retro disco more than classic vintage) I think that this would be a good font for the cover as it is bold and would be eye catching and would make the magaizine stand out. I like the way the lower case 'i' looks in this style and I think this would appeal to people who are interested in indie music however it doesn't really match my vintage style or theme which could be a problem. I think this would be an appealing font to both genders which is good as the target market is then still quite broad.

Font 10

This font style matches the theme, genre and style of my magazine and I think that this would look good on the cover, contents or double page spread. I think that if done in the right colours, the font would make the magazine appeal to both genders keeping the target audience fairly broad which is something I want to do as it means a large amount of people would want to buy and read the magazine meaning it would be a more comerically viable magazine. I think that this font looks goo as it is, however if done in bold then it would be ideal to use as the masthead on the cover whoch would be eye catching and would also be appealing to both genders.

Doing this research has made me realise that a lot of the vintage style fonts which I like wouldn't be suitable or appealing to both males and females. As my target audience is both as I want to have a broad target audience, I need to find a font that has a vintage look which will appeal to both genders in order to make sure that boys and girls will be attracted to my magazine and will buy my magazine.

Institution Research

A large amount of magazine publishers are in existance. I need to research these publishers to make sure I know the type ofinstitutions which will be interested in publishing a magazine of this genre.

  • The Hearst Corporation is an American mass media group based in the Hearst Tower, Manhattan in New York City. Founded by William Randolph Hearst as an owner of newspapers, the company's holdings now include a wide variety of media.
  • Its major interests include 15 daily and 36 weekly newspapers and more that 300 magazines around the world
  • Diversions of the company include: Hearst Television, Hearst Magazines, Hearst Interactive Media, Hearst Business Media, Hearst Entertainment and Syndication and Hearst Newspapers
  • The magazines which are owned and published by the Hearst Corporation include; Harpers Bazaar, ELLE, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan and Esquire

  • Bauer Media Groupis a multinational media company operating in 15 countries worldwide
  • Its headquarters is in Hamburg, Germany and was formerly called Heinrich Bauer Verlag after the founder and has since been owned and managed by various members of the Bauer family
  • The worldwide circulation of the Bauer Media Group's magazine titles amounts to 38 million magazines a week
  • It publishes music magazines 'MOJO',  'Q' and 'KERRANG' and owns the music television station 'THE BOX' which along with Channel 4

  • ICP Media (formerly International Publishing Corporation) is a wholly owned susidary of Time Inc and is a consumer magazine and digital publisher in the United Kingdom

  • Diversions of the company: ICP Newspapers, ICP magazines, ICP Trade and Technical,  ICP Books, ICP Printing, ICP New Products
  • They branch over many different platforms such as online magazines as well as traditional physical paper magazines
  • They are the UK's leading consumer magazine publisher as they sell magazines to over 26 million adults
  • Their online magazines gross over 25 million views each month
  • Examples of the magazines which they publish include NME and Loaded
  • ICP are known for their award winning music magazine NME which reaches a population of 1.1 million people each week and is the longest published and most respected music magazine worldwide
  • The magazine is not the only thing which it is known for, NME>COM gives viewers/readers the option to see and read the newest edition of the magazine as well as gibing them the opportunity to look back over every issue published for the past 60 years since the magazine was published.

I believe that ICP Media would be the perfect company to publish my magazine because they have a lot of experience with publishing music magazines and have a good relationship with a large popuation. Reaching out and communicationg with over 26 million adults in the UK will be a good start for my magazine as the brand reputation would be brilliant and would make it more of a success.

Audience Research

The target audience for my music magazine will be people who are interested in upcomming indie and folk mausic. I have realised that these people tend to be teenagers or young adults (normally aged from 16 up until their late twenties) meaning that my photos, styling, features and articles will have to relate to and appeal to this age range.

This age range will be interested in music which is why I am creating a music magazine, however they will also be interested in other things such as films, cuture and fashion meaning that my magazine should also include these kinds of features which means that it will bulk out my magazine and will be more of an attraction to this target audience.

The kind of music magazine that would appeal to my target audience would be 'The Fly'. This is because they feature similar types of music that I will use in my magazine. The traget audience for 'The Fly' would be young adults because of the genre and also teenagers because it is free. The price is something which I need to consider because the amount of money it costs will play a huge part in the type of people who will buy the magazine, For example, aiming it at teenagers is good because the genre will appeal to them however they might not have enough money to buy the magazine and so it would be pointless aiming it at them if they dont buy it.

Audience: www.uktribes.com

Magazine Name Research

This is the magazine name spider diagram that I have made in order to help me find a suitable name for the music magazine that goes with the genre and the style of the magazine. I like 'IF' which stands for indie folk which is short and snappy and has some meaning. In my opinion the simplicity would make this a good name for my magazine. I also like 'INNOVATE' as it links in with the new, indie type music as it is a very new and current genre. If i make the artist on the cover of my magazine an upcomming artist, innovate would be the best name. Flipside is another name which I like which links to the indie genre.

Music Style Research

I want to use the music genre 'indie folk' for my magazine. This is because I like this type of music and I think that the styling, photographs and article surrounding this music genre could be made to be really interesting.
I want to do a vintage style magazine and I think that this genre fits really well with that kind of styling. Also, for my music artist I have someone in mind that would look the part and would be perfect for being the cover star on an indie folk magazine cover.

Research

Indie Folk is a music genre that arose in the 1990's from singer/songwriters in the indie rock community influenced by the folk music scenes of the 50's, 60's and early 70's, country music and indie rock.

Typical Instruments used by indie folk artists include accoustic guitars, double bass, piano, harmonium, mandolin, drums, banjo, violin, electric guitar

Examples of Artists

Some indie folk musicians can be very successful

Ellie Goulding, Wye Oak, The Lumineers, Pale Face, Noah and the Whale, Mumford and Sons, Of Monsters and Men, Laura Marling, Johnny Flynn, Ben Howard, Frank Turner, Florence and the Machine, Dog is Dead, Bombay Bicycle Club

Colour Research / Analysis

In my magazine I will need to use a colour scheme of three or four colours. I need to research certain colours which go together to see which will go and look the best in my magazine. Because the style for my magazine will be vintage I need the magazine to follow light pastel and old styled colours to fit in with the styling.

1. This is a colour pallet which consists of dar and light orangey/beige and light and dark tones of bluey green. I think the colours work well together and would look good on my magazine.

2. These pastel colours and tones will fit into the vintage theme well however it would be quite girly which would limit the target audience to one specific gender which wouldn't be ideal. However I think that the tones would work well.

3. These darker tones would be more effective than lighter colours if used in the right way however vintage should look lighter and more free than dark which look quite harsh to the reader. Lots of dark reds wouldnt go with my theme however light browns would look good.

4. Again these colours are quite dark and quite girly, however the brown/beige and blue I think are quite nice and could suit the theme of my magazine and would therefore look good and be aesthetically pleasing to the reader

5. Although this colour scheme of dark purples through to light beige goes against a lot of the things that I have said, I think these colours are really good togther and would look cool on and in a magazine. However I dont think that this would go with the vintage theme very well as it is very dark.

6. Like colour pallet 2, this is very girly and would mean that the target audience would be limited to just females, however the light tones are something whch I could take inspiration from in order to make the magazine look more vintage.

7. I like the blues and greens of this colour selection. I think if the right tones were used and mixed with other shades of other colours then this would link in well with my vintage theme for the magazine.

8. This colour pallet is quite girly but I think that the lighter, more pastel sections would look good on and in my magazine. If I use a girl on the front of my magazine (which I plan to do) then the colours will link in to the style of that artist, however these coulours will probably not be very appealing to both genders which will decrease the target audience to a more niche market which could be bad.

Practice Music Magazine

This is my practice music magazine which I have made and shown step by step. This shows how I have created it by adding all of the different features starting with the magazine name 'DEADLINE'. I chose to call it deadline because it sounds like an authentic name for a magazine. I chose the font for this particular piece of text because it is bold and eye catching and I think that it links to the name which is very to the point. I have then added the image of Alex Turner, front man for indie rock band The Arctic Monkeys which shows him looking relly cool which again links to the name whoch is snappy. I placed it on the left of the magazine cover rather than in the middle of the page as it looks quirky and unique and I want my actual magazine cover to look like this. I then added the text 'MAGAZINE' under the magazine name in the same font only in a smaller size which looks professional. After I added one of the bands album names which is presented as a quote from Alex Turner in a hand written font. I have done this as it draws in the readers attention to the page and gives an insight into what the interview with him will be about. The hand written font links into the image of him on the front cover as he looks cool, relaxed but doesn't look like he's trying too hard and the font has the same look. I then added a barcode onto the bottom of the page to make it look real and professional as all normal magazines have barcodes. To follow this I added the price for the same reasons. I used the same heading font for the proce only not in bold as it isn't the most improtant thing on the page however it needs to link in to the rest of the magazine cover and not look stupid for being out of place. The colours I have used are black and white with the exceptions of dark shades on the image. I think that the simple colours have a good effect of looking very clean and staying professional which is my main aim.

Genre Artist Magazine Analysis- Ellie Goulding

This is Ellie Goulding, an indie folk artist on the front cover of 1883 magazine- a magazine specialising in new and exciting people/fasions/trends. I thought that this magazine cover was interesting because it isn't really a conventional magazine cover. Ellie is shown on the right hand side of the page which I think is an interesting way of showing the cover star and I like her facial expression as it is really different. I also like the way that the name of the magazine is positioned at the top of the page in the left corner. It looks very sharp and, because of the space surrounding it, it is very clear and easy to read. The bar code is in the bottom left corner and is fairly small but includes the price, date and issue number. I like the styling of Ellie because it is very revealing and shows a lot of flesh, however it is a very modern and up to date style. Indie folk artists are known for their 'out there' fashion sense (Florence from Florence and the Machine for example) and I think that the dress is really good and looks brilliant in the picture. The contents of the magazine is shown to the left of the artist which is a really unique way to show information and it is centerally alligned which looks really interesting and creative. I want my cover to look interesting and I like that the artist is to the side. I want to use this style somewhere on my magazine (either on the cover, contents or double page spread.) I like the way that the make up looks really natural and I like that her hair looks deshevelled, yet still styled and shiny and perfect. This is how I want my magazine to look. I like the black, white and gold colour scheme makes the magazine seem really high class and quality and I think it looks great with the image of the artist.

The images in the magazine are also really interesting and unique. The one on the left shows the artist (again) on the left of the picture and her hair is still styled to look messy, yet still styled. The background is simple, yet it looks as though it is in an interesting place with the wood as a back drop for the photo shoot.
I also like the outfit which she is wearing, the pattern on the shirt looks quite vintage which is the style which I want my artist to have. I think that the vintage look really relates to the folk section of my magazine and reflects the genre really well and the shirt element refelcts the indie section of my magazine.
I like the sunglasses as they make Ellie look quite edgy and quirky and asthough she has a bit of an attitude which is common amoungst music stars as most of them have a bit of an ego and the sunglasses reflect this really well. Overall I think that this image works and I think that a picture of my artist doing this kind of pose would look really good as a feature image in my magazine. Her hair style is shaved on one side which shows that she is an indie artist. This teamed with her style and relaxed, cross armed pose is really unique and cool which is how I want my artist to look.

This magazine is also of Ellie Goulding only on the cover of a different magazine. The magazine which she is on is called 'PAPER MAG' whcih is a cultural magazine which would appeal to teenagers and young adults. This magazine is called the 'night life' issue which I would expect to be slightly different as magazines are supposedly read throughout the day however night life suggests that the content and images would be more 'out there'. From this idea, Ellie on the front is wearing a more provocative outfit than usual. Wearing a small top underneath a massively sequined/embelished top which is something that people would wear when they go out at night so Ellie already fits the image of my magazine. She is posing with her hand on her hip and a lit match in the other hand which- like the image inside 1883 magazine- shows her having a slight attitude and ego which matches the image of most music stars. I like the colour scheme of black white and pink and the pink light/background matches her hair which looks really cool. The header of the magazine sticks with the colour palett which brings the whole page together and keeps the simplicity. The pieces of text on the cover are all on the right side of the page and are all in boxes which makes the page look neat which isn't normally how PAPER looks. The barcode for this magazine is in the top right hand corner and is the same size as one of the title text boxes meaning that they have made the bar code a feature which I really like as it is quite unique. Although Ellies hair is dyed and it has clearly been styled, it looks quite natural which is a look which I want to put across on my magazine. The make up (except eyes) looks really natural which is, again, something I want to show in my magazine.

The images used in the magazine are really cool and interesting and I think that they link really well to the 'night life' culture topic running throughout the magazine.
The image on the left shows Ellie with her hair falling out (purposely) of a huge feathered hat and holding a piece of expensice material over her chest. The feathered hat links well to the indie type genre because its about having an individual style and it also links to the vintage style which I want to show in my magazine.
The provocative pose holding the materiawl over her body links to the topic of the magazine and the night life element which suggested that the images would be quite different to what we were expecting to see and would be quite contraversial. The thing which I like about this image is that although she is topless, the costume (hat) takes away all of the attention from this and makes the pose less contraversial. I like that they have used a piece of draped material as the background as it looks quite unique and really interesting. I also like that it isn't a block colour as it makes the image less harsh to look at. Overall I reall like this image and the magazine cover as I think that the theme runs through the whole magazine (or at least the images) which makes the whole thing professional.

Artist

I think that these images used of Ellie on and in the magazines portray her really well. I think that, although they wtyle her to fit the magazine style/topics, they keep it so it looks like her which is a good thing as it keeps her with an identity. My artist needs to have an identity and so I need to keep the same kind of look/style the same throughout the magazine, whether this be clothing, hair, make up of the font style of her name.
