Magazine Cover Analysis

'The Fly' is a free monthly UK magazine.
The title of the magazine is at the top of the page and is in bold which cathced the eye of the reader as it is also the biggest thing (except the picture) on the page. Having the strange, unique title 'The Fly' reflects the indie unusual style of music within the magazine which is significant to the reader as they then have an idea of what is within the magazine. The layout of the magazine cover is fairly simple. The image is in the middle of the page which draws the readers eye directly to this as it is the centre of visual interest. The image used is of The Vaccines who are the band featured in the magazine meaning that fans of the band will be more likely to read the magazine as they will want to know the latest news and information about them. In the photo they have been styled to show that they are a group rather than four individuals. The double denim which they are wearing has also been used as a body on the cover which connotes that there will be a section within the interview where they will be discussing their fashion and styling. Beneath the main part of the image there is the bands name 'THE VACCINES' which is big and bright red which catches the readers eye. Because of the brightness, people look at this section of the cover and be encouraged to get the magazine because of the band which are featured in the magazine. The footer of the magazine cover includes names of other bands and artists which the magazine focuses on throughout the issue. The names have been done in bright colours which also grabs attention even though it is probably the least important part of the cover . The colours used on the page are black, white, red and bluie which is very simple yet effective as it is attention grabbing. Also above the name of the band there are words which connote to the reader the kind of subjects which the interview will be about- talking about their #1 album, their arena tour and double denim. This has been done in white lettering as it is over the top of the picture so it stands out. The target audience for 'The Fly' will be teenagers and young adults as they are interested in this type of music.

'Esquire' is a mens magazine which has been created to inform males about culture, fashion, money and women.
The title 'Esquire' has been used because it is a power address meaning that men have a great, very high status therefore proving that the magazines target audience is men. The font of the magazine title is very flowy which gives the impression that the content will not be very serious (things such as politics, etc- things that some people may consider to be very serious and really quite boring which is something 'Esquire' definitely isn't. The layout of the cover is very busy with lots of chunks of texts in different, boxy shapes around the image making the cover very bold and bright. The image which has been used on the front cover is that of model Daisy Lowe standing in a very provocative pose showing off her body to the potential readers looking really sexy. This has been done in order to influence men to buy the magazine. Her face is also very provocative and sexy (the male gaze) which further influences men to pick up the magazine and buy it. The different sizes of the fonts used on the cover of the magazine make it fun to look at. With the magazine being aimed at young males, they are likely to want to read a fun magazine therefore seeing the exciting cover will be appealing and will make them want to buy the magazine. The cover is then made to be more exciting by the variety of of different fonts used as well as font colours. Unlike a lot of magazines, 'Esquire' uses more than three colours on the front cover. As well as turquoise as the background which is the most prominent colour on the cover, yellow has been used in some shapes and as a colour of some of the text. Alos, sections of text and some shapes are dark blue and a lot of the writing- including the magaizne title 'Esquire'- is white. Also, although only a small part of the cover is pink, it is very eye catching and prominent which would make the cover stand out on the shelves.

i-D is a British magazine dedicated to fashion, music, art and youth culture. The layout is extremely simple. there is hardly any text on the cover apart from the subheading 'STARRING AGYNESS DEYN' which has been displayed in bold lettering. The phrase 'LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION' has been used as a strap libe above the magazine title i-D (which is very big and in neon green and isn't straight across, istead it is on a 90 degree angle which makes it look more unique) has been shown in small lettering meaning that the reader has to look closely and pay a lot of attention in order to see it properly. It uses the phrase 'IT'S SHOW TIME'  to add a sense of mystery for the potential reader and would encourage them to read the magazine to figure out the meaning. The image on the cover is that of Agyness Deyn, a famously controversial model. A close up on her face shows her looking very care-free and happy and her wink suggests that the content of the magazine will be fun and light hearted which would appeal to the magazines target audience. The target audience for the magazine is young adults (late teens, early twenties) as they will be the ones who are most interested in the content if i-D. No writing has been used on the cover which could be seen as boring as it means the purchase of the magazine is reliant on the image and the reputation of the magazine. The only text that has been used is at the bottom of the picture in white and in bold which makes it stand out and not just blend into the bright picture. The picture is the main focus point of the magazine cover. The bright clothing and light hair teamed with the fun pose makes the magazine cover very entertaining and makes the reader feel intrigued. Rather than going overly glamorous on the cover, i-D has taken the reputation of Agyness Deyn being individual and have styled her to look very natural. She looks very happy to be there. This exciting cover would encourage people to buy the magazine.
