Magazine Contents Analysis

This is the contents cover dor indie music magazine 'The Fly'. The contents is from the 'JANUARY 2011' issue which is shown at the top of the page in large, bold, bright red font which catches the eye of the reader when they look at it. It also fades into the picture used which makes the whole look of the page more flowing. The image that has been used has been made to look as though it has been painted and they text above it hasd the same effect which looks unique. the unusualness of the image reflects the indie music within the magazine and therefore relates to the subject of the magazine as well as the magaizne reader. Although the image is one of the least important things on the contents page, it is the largest thing and is therefore the centre of visual interet. Because of the scale and the unusualness, the eye is immediately drawn to the close up image which is very powerful and will have an effect on the reader. On the bottom third of the page is the actual contents section of the magazine. The page numbers have been done in quite large bold text showing its relevance as well as drawing attention to the page numbers. Beneath each page number there is a short summary of what is on the page which is displayed in smaller text meaning that the reader will have to look fairly closely to see what it says. The colour scheme used on this contents page is black (and grey), white and red which is a common colour scheme used in lots of magazines. Although this is frequent and could be concieved as 'normal', the page looks unique whihx, again, relates to the music and the reader. In the top left corner of the page, the title 'CONTENTS' is shown however it is very small as it is obvious to the reader that the page is the contents page. Also, in the bottom right hand corner is 'The Fly'  logo showing giving brand recognition of the magazine. 'The Fly' targets young adults interested in new indie music and the quirkiness of the contents page reflects them as it will be appealing to the target audience.

On this contents page of music and entertainment magazine 'Vibe', the page header 'CONTENTS' is presented in an unusual style. It is shown on three seperate lines in a large, white, bold font which draws the readers attention as it stands out and is shown to be very vibrant against the dark background. The layout of the magazine is very clear and is simple for the reader to see. The rest of the page is then split into two sections with the subheadings 'FEATURES' and 'FASHION'. The text used for these subheadings is bold to make the words stand out as well as using black as the font colour. This makes the words stand out even more against the light background. The writing is quite girly and so the font reflects the image used on the page. Beneath the subheadings in a smaller, simpler fonts are the pages, page numbers and page summaries. At the bottom right corner of the page there is the name of the magazine and the month of release in a small font so that all of the information which needs to be included has been. The simple font style and colour of these sections of the magazine make it easy for the audience to read against the background colour. The image which has been used is of the 'Vibe' cover star Ciara wearing a nude outfit which matches the page colour scheme which makes the page look fluent as nothing looks out of place. The image shows her posing laying on her back looking directly into the camera whcih is meant to be quite provocative which has been done as a representation of the artist who is known for being quite sexy and provocative. The target audience for 'Vibe' magazine is R&B lovers and so the inage of that particular artist has a clear link with the audience reading the magazine as they will be reading it to learn about the latest news and information about her and that music genre.
Esquire is a mens magazine which has been created to inform males about cukture, fashion, money and women. The title 'Esquire' has been used as it is a power address meaning men have a great, high status therefore proving that the magazines target audience is men. The magazine title has been placed at the top of the contents page to show its importance. The page header 'CONTENTS' has been done in a bright colour which stands out on the oage and will draw attention to this section of the page then they will know the reason for the page. The bright colour also reflects the quirkiness of the magazine (also represented by the image used) and the unique, light-hearted topics within the magazine. The page subheading 'ALL ABOUT WOMEN' has been done in a large font to let the reader know the the subject of the magazine as a whol. The page numbers and summaries are positioned around the the image and are in black which makes them stand out on the white background making it easy to read. The page numbers are shown in a light blue colour which matches the light blue box in the top right corner of the page meaning all of the colours and sections of the page are interlinked meaning nothing on the page looks out of place. The image used on this contents page has been created using lots of different images of women to make a picture of one woman. The effect of this is that it looks very interetsing and quirky and the reader will find it very interesting, the image also links with the topic of the magazine 'ALL ABOUT WOMEN' as the image has been made out of pictures of a variety of different women. The layout (having text positioned around the image) is very unusual and is and interesting way to present the page as it looks very different to any other magazines contents page.
